Jeff
Miller was introduced to Ontario's wilderness during a trip to
Algonquin Park when he was thirteen. His art has grown out of canoe
trips which span 60 years and include professional guiding. Some 35
years ago he put down his fly rod and picked up his brush and paints,
in doing this he began to see himself "irrefutably as nature."
He believes that his most important learning began to occur while
paddling a canoe "at the edge where the water meets the land."
His work is colourful and expressionistic with a deep love of nature
that has evolved from contemplative and intimate observation over
time.
He works mainly in acrylics and oils. His "bush notes ",
as he calls them are quickly executed watercolours that capture
the spirit of the day and form the ideas for his larger works. Other
favourite subjects are Lake Superior, Georgian Bay, Killarney Park,
Orillia and the Ottawa Valley. Jeff has a strong environmental sense
and sees the intimate connection between wilderness protection and
planet survival. Jeff is a teacher and offers workshops designed
to alleviate the pressure of excellence to instead employ "our
nature-ness" in the creative process. He does this from his
studio near Huntsville, as well as short intimate teaching excursions
to wilderness areas. His Look See Paint, The Art of Loving Nature,
created 14 years ago, is now being offered in the National Parks
summer programs and in schools around Ontario.
