Born near Claremont, Ontario, then moved to Owen Sound. In 1910 he joined Grip Limited, a printing company in Toronto, where he met JEH MacDonald, Arthur Lismer, Fred Varley and Frank Carmichael; from 1912-1914 he worked for Rous and Mann. He traveled and painted with these artists until his early death.
